Using the “Bian Tu” (changing coating) lacquer decoration technique that the Shen Shao’an lacquerware is particularly proficient in, various patterns are naturally created by making use of the properties of Chinese lacquer. As the saying goes, the patterns are formed naturally, presenting an infinite variety of changes. Drawing inspiration from nature and not being restricted by established rules, each utensil made through the Bian Tu process is unique.
Two types of cups are respectively coated with red and black lacquer. Each time the lacquer is applied, it needs to be polished, and the next step can only be carried out after it is completely dried in a shady place. Each layer of lacquer may take at least three to five days, or as long as ten days. The golden parts are pasted with gold foil. Combined with the texture of Chinese lacquer, a perfect match of red and gold, as well as black and gold, is created, which greatly enhances the ornamental value and also adds a sense of luxury when drinking tea.
